Last summer our family was trying to encourage Dad to move from his beautiful, spacious and very fully furnished home to a retirement residence – but he wouldn’t budge. In part, he was overwhelmed with what needed to be done – and he felt that with our help he could continue to manage on his own indefinitely. My husband and I (in our sixties) had already decided that it was time for us to start planning our own downsize from our country lifestyle to a city bungalow. If we were having difficulty looking after ourselves, how could we also provide support to my dad?  Meeting Bev and Steve at a networking group social event last summer was serendipitous. When they explained what their business, Tender Transitions, is all about, we felt a weight lifted from our shoulders. When I mentioned to Dad that Bev could coordinate all aspects of his move, working closely with him to ensure that he was very much part of the process, he too seemed very relieved – and quickly began to see the merits of downsizing. Throughout the process, Bev and her team were amazing: starting with providing a floor plan indicating what furniture would fit; to referrals to other local service providers as needed; to working well into the evening on move day, unpacking and organizing an overwhelming number of boxes; and so much more. Bev’s cheerful disposition, tireless work ethic and respect for her clients and families ensured the process went smoothly. It’s now about six weeks after the move – and Dad is enjoying putting his personal touches to his new home. When it came time for my Mother to leave her home of 19 years, and move into a retirement home, the task seemed daunting. She was feeling overwhelmed, and so was I as I live out of town in Ottawa.
